NS 192B - Project Brainstorm

HEY JUNIORS AND SENIORS!

Are you interested in teaching school kids about the brain? Do you want to get some teaching experience while showing kids why the brain is important?

GET INVOLVED IN PROJECT BRAINSTORM

Project Brainstorm is the K-12 science education outreach program of the Brain Research Institute (BRI) and the Neuroscience Interdepartmental Ph.D.and Undergraduate Programs. The goal of Project Brainstorm is to stimulate interest in science for children and young adults in grades K-12 by providing hands-on learning experiences that emphasize the function and importance of the brain. A typical classroom visit lasts about an hour and involves group participation in interactive games and hands-on exercises with brain models and real animal and human brains.

Importantly, UCLA can give you academic credit for this service by enrolling in a NS 192B internship class. Additionally, internships help you embellish your CV, as well as obtain letters of recommendation for grad/med/vet school.

This course will give you 4 P/NP general units. You are expected to put in 4-6 hours a week of work, which include weekly writing assignments, informal group meetings and culminating with 4 school visits, so treat this as a serious class.

The course will have 4 classroom meetings to develop your program, followed by 4 school visits.  The classroom meetings are from 10am-11:50am on Wednesdays, beginning Week 2.  The school visits are tentatively scheduled for the following Wednesdays Week 6-9 between 9:30am-12:30pm.

This course should be great fun. The next class is scheduled to start in Winter 2009. If interested, please contact: brainstorm@ucla.edu
